The North Queensland Cowboys’ hopes of securing a top eight spot have been dealt a major blow with Valentine Holmes picking up a shoulder injury in the State of Origin finale.

Holmes picked up the injury in the dying seconds of the first half when he was driven into the ground by a tackle from NSW Blues duo Mitch Moses and Cameron Murray.

The 25-year-old was seen cradling his shoulder in agony as he was attended to by a team doctor on the half-time siren, and he was replaced by AJ Brimson at half-time.

According to Nine NRL reporter Danika Mason, Holmes injured the AC joint in his right shoulder, but could avoid surgery.

“There is a fair bit of concern for Valentine Holmes,” Mason told Nine.

“We do have confirmation that has done an AC joint injury in his shoulder. At this stage they don’t think surgery will be required, which is certainly good news, but they do hold a fair bit of concern for him going forward.”

Holmes’ injury comes at an extremely inopportune time for the Cowboys, who are just two points off the eighth-placed Sharks heading into Round 18.

The Cowboys will aim to continue a top-eight push when they face the Sydney Roosters in Townsville on Saturday.
