The 13th round of the 2023 Formula One season came from the 7.004 km long Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Stavelot as the Belgian Grand Prix. One of the Sprint weekends this year, the Belgian GP was the last race ahead of the summer break. Despite starting from P6, Max Verstappen managed to take home the third consecutive win at the Belgian Grand Prix, and his eighth consecutive F1 Grand Prix victory.
Charles Leclerc started on Pole position after going second fastest in Qualifying due to Max Verstappen’s five place grid penalty. The Ferrari driver got a good start, but was overtaken by Sergio Perez in the first lap itself. Meanwhile Oscar Piastri took some damage in the front lap after coming in contact with Sainz, and then the wall, thereby ending the McLaren rookie’s race. Sainz also had to return to pits, with Ferrari retiring his car.
Verstappen managed to overtake provisional race leader and teammate Perez on Lap 17, and the reigning World Champion managed to build a bigger gap from rest of the grid thereon. A little bit of rain came sprinkling down a few laps later, however, not too heavy to make the drivers switch to Intermediates.

This also marked his third consecutive win at Spa, and the team’s With a last lap pit stop, Lewis Hamilton switched to brand new Mediums in a bid to set the fastest lap time and steal the additional point from Verstappen – which he was successful in doing.
“It’s a new spot [to win from] P6! I knew we had a good car, it was just about surviving Turn 1, it all got very tight and I just stayed out of that. This track is super hard on the tyres, so you don’t want to do unnecessary things. It was tricky with the laps that it was raining – I had a little sideways moment, definitely not a corner you want it to happen on,” said Verstappen after the race.
