There were 10 new cases confirmed early on Thursday morning with a further four reported throughout the day.

Transmission at the MCG continues to be at the focal point, with two people who weren’t known to or sitting near each other contracting the virus.

Premier Daniel Andrews, on announcing the lockdown, said he hoped it would be “short and sharp”.

“We’ve got no choice. We don’t want this getting away from us and being locked down for months,” he told reporters.

He emphasised that the Delta strain of COVID-19 was moving faster than contact tracers had seen before.

While they were keeping pace, he said, it was only a matter of time before it escaped their control.
