Washing cars at home can result in hefty Rs 5,000 fine in Gurugram: Here’s why

Giving your car a wash using potable water at home in Gurugram can now result in a hefty penalty. The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has announced a fine of Rs 5,000 on residents found washing their vehicles with potable water during supply hours between 5 AM and 9 AM.
Additionally, if someone is found repeating the offense, the MCG has warned of stricter actions, including disconnecting the water supply to their homes. This will result in a fine of Rs 5,000, plus an additional Rs 1,000 fee for reconnecting the water supply.
The strict measure is driven by Gurugram’s struggle with water scarcity. Washing cars at home, particularly with a pipe of running tap water, results in substantial water wastage. Furthermore, soapy runoff from car washing can infiltrate the ground, contaminating groundwater resources. It can also block drains, leading to unsanitary conditions.

The new rule is part of the MCG’s efforts to conserve water and promote sustainable practices in the city. Gurugram, like many other Indian cities, faces water scarcity challenges, and the MCG is taking steps to address this issue by encouraging responsible water usage.
Car washing at home: What are the alternatives?
To clean your car without wasting water, try using a bucket of soapy water instead of a pipe. This way, you can control the amount of water you use. Another effective method is using waterless car wash products, which clean and shine your car without the need for water. You can also use a spray bottle with water and a microfiber cloth to wipe down your car. For tougher spots, a sponge can help scrub off dirt. These methods not only save water but also ensure your car stays clean and shiny.
