How good are you at reverse parking? How reliant are you on that backup camera to stop you from stopping too far from or too close to that car behind? How do you think you’d fare in a reverse parking challenge against Max Orido, who can throw an MR-2 back to within an inch of a traffic cone with no camera needed?
Orido pulled off the stunt at 4A-G Festival, a Japanese celebration of everything that runs Toyota’s venerated four-cylinder under its hood. The video, posted to Twitter, shows Orido’s podium-topping attempt at the challenge.
Every competitor reportedly used the same MR-2 for the challenge, according to the Drive, so Orido’s familiarity with the car didn’t even make the difference in winning him the trophy. He’s really just that good of a driver: attests:
As video footage of the festival shows, the event puts all contenders behind the wheel of the same first-generation Toyota MR2—a supercharged AW11 model, to be precise. Drivers then have to accelerate heavily in reverse and time their braking just right to get as close to the cone as they can. Some drivers brake way too late, knocking the cone over, while others brake way too early. Orido, however, reportedly came within one centimeter of the cone. Talk about precision driving, err, braking.
Max Orido is a better driver than all of us, so it makes sense that he’d be a better parker too. Keep him in mind next time your backup camera breaks, and remember that he’d be perfectly fine. The problem is all on you.
