“Rockstar” is one of Imtiaz Ali’s best known work, starring Ranbir Kapoor in the main lead. The award-winning movie gained such immense popularity, that it was re-released in theaters earlier this year, over a decade after its original release, due to high demand. While Ranbir Kapoor delivered an outstanding performance as Jordan, it’s a lesser-known fact that Imtiaz Ali had initially approached the actor for a different project.

In a conversation with Mid-Day, Imtiaz Ali discussed about his plans to create “Rockstar,” which initially didn’t come to fruition. The story was circulated among a select few before Ali eventually began working on it years later. During a screening event, he encountered Ranbir Kapoor, and after a brief exchange, they met up again.

Ali had intended to present Kapoor with a script for another film, but he was so absorbed in the “Rockstar” script that the actor became curious about it. Ranbir Kapoor was so intrigued by the musical drama, that he even started narrating the story to Ali with great enthusiasm. Impressed by Kapoor’s passion, Imtiaz felt he was the ideal fit for the role and asked him if he would take it on. Kapoor’s positive response led Imtiaz to promise he would return with the “Rockstar” script.
However, Imtiaz had misplaced the script and had to rewrite it from memory. “I rewrote it from memory,” Imtiaz admitted. The 2011 film also features Nargis Fakhri, Aditi Rao Hydari, Piyush Mishra, Shernaz Patel, Kumud Mishra, Sanjana Sanghi, Aakash Dahiya, and Shammi Kapoor.

Imtiaz Ali recently directed the biographical drama “Amar Singh Chamkila,” starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra. Ranbir Kapoor, meanwhile, is busy filming “Ramayana,” directed by Nitesh Tiwari, and featuring Sai Pallavi and Yash in key roles.
