SAN JOSE — A woman died Thursday nearly five months after she was hit by a garbage truck in East San Jose, according to authorities.
The collision happened around 9:40 a.m. on Feb. 8 at the intersection of South White and Tully roads, San Jose police Sgt. Jorge Garibay said in a news release Friday.
The woman was walking across South White Road outside of a marked crosswalk when she was hit by a gray 2008 Peterbilt garbage truck making a right-hand turn from northbound South White Road onto eastbound Tully Road, according to Garibay.
The driver of the garbage truck remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, Garibay said.
The woman was taken to an area hospital, where she died of her injuries Thursday, according to Garibay. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release her identity once it is confirmed and her next of kin is notified.
The death marked the eighth pedestrian fatality and the 20th overall traffic fatality of the year on city streets. At this time last year, San Jose had recorded 17 roadway deaths.
