Woolworths shoppers left reeling over ‘ridiculous’ issue with $2 Olympics coins: ‘Do better’

Australian coin collectors are reeling over a “ridiculous” issue with Woolworths’ recent $2 Olympics coin release.

In July, the supermarket giant and the Royal Australian Mint announced they were offering a limited edition range of $2 coins to commemorate Australia’s 2024 Olympic and Paralympic teams.

The promotion means Woolworths customers who pay with cash have the chance to collect four exclusive $2 coins in their change, with one design being released into tills every two weeks across an eight-week period.

But now some customers have hit out over an influx of eBay and Facebook Marketplace listings, offering large numbers of the Olympic coins for sale.

They claim that some sellers are being able to gain access to whole bags of the $2 coins — despite there being a two-per-customer limit — while shoppers struggle to get their hands on them in stores.

The eBay listings show sealed bags of the coins are being sold for $115, while Marketplace sellers are asking as much as $200 for bags of the limited edition currency.

In one angry X post, a Woolworths shopper called on the retailer to “do better” and shared screenshots of some recent listings.

“When are you going to do something about bags of Olympic coins being sold?” they asked in a recent post.

“Limit of two coins per customer? That’s why so many of us are being told they have run out.

“Do better. Evidence posted again.”

The X user added: “The staff that won’t open them are obviously giving the bag to someone, probably to sell. It’s disgusting that so many bags are on eBay and Marketplace. Customers are missing out and Woolies is doing nothing about it AGAIN.”

Another social media user agreed that it was a frustrating situation.

“My local stores have bags in the till but won’t open them. It’s ridiculous. They aren’t ‘allowed’ to choose which coins I get, nor can they open a bag of them if they already have other coins in the till,” they said on X.

“I do not understand the gatekeeping? Yet eBay is full of these bags!”

A Woolworths representative has said that the supermarket is investigating the issue.

“We’re aware and are currently looking into this,” the spokesperson said.

“We don’t encourage the resale of these items and it’s clearly unacceptable and doesn’t meet our expectations, and those of the wider community.”
