Shared by TikTok user @MetroTrainsOfficial, the group was leaving through the self-serve checkout area of the unnamed Melbourne store when the altercation happened.
When the Woolworths employee politely asked to inspect their backpacks, one shopper became abusive.
“F*** off, you ain’t checking my bag,” he said.
The Woolies worker replied, “Mate, don’t talk to me like that” – which only incited the shopper even more.
“I’ll speak to you however the f*** I want to, shut up,” the shopper replied.
“Who the f*** do you think you are, what the f*** bro.”
As they continued to exit the store, the group continued to yell slurs and abuse at the Woolies team member.
Woolworths employees, like many retail workers, may ask to check customers’ bags from time to time in line with the supermarket’s conditions of entry.
A Woolworths spokesperson has told 7NEWS.com.au that the supermarket does not tolerate abusive behaviour.
“All team members deserve to be treated with respect and do not need to accept abusive behaviour in any circumstance,” the spokesperson said.
“We will not hesitate to ban customers from re-entering our stores if we hear of reports of abuse or aggression.”
TikTok users also criticised the shoppers over their treatment of the staff member.
“When you realise that they have to do that because it’s part of their job, it makes this not funny at all,” said one.
Added another: “These guys need to learn some respect.”
Said one more: “This is disgusting to watch.”
