World Environment Day ’24: Maruti Suzuki pledges Rs 450 crore for renewable energy, unveils pilot Biogas Plant

Maruti Suzuki India has launched a pilot biogas plant at its Manesar facility for the fiscal year 2024-25, utilizing in-house food waste and Napier grass as resources. This initiative aligns with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s ‘Waste to Energy’ program.
In the fiscal year 2023-24, MSIL invested Rs 120.8 crores in renewable energy projects, including solar power and biogas. The company has pledged to quadruple this investment to Rs 450 crores over the next three years, starting in FY 2024-25, significantly bolstering its environmental sustainability initiatives.
The pilot biogas plant at Manesar, announced on the occasion of World Environment Day, is designed to produce 0.2 tons of biogas daily, with an anticipated output of approximately 1 lakh standard cubic metres in FY 2024-25. This will offset around 190 tonnes of CO2 annually. For this, the plant follows principles of circularity, using food waste from canteens and Napier grass as raw materials. The energy produced will power manufacturing processes at the Manesar facility, and the residual organic manure will be utilized in horticulture, making it a zero-discharge model.

Speaking about the company’s green energy initiatives, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO of Maruti Suzuki India, said, “Energy is one of the critical inputs in the manufacturing process. As we ramp up our production capacity from around 2 million to 4 million by 2030-31, we are also accelerating our efforts to increase the share of sustainable and renewable energy sources across our operations. This is in line with Suzuki’s Environment Vision 2050 and the Government of India’s renewable energy focus.”
Maruti Suzuki is actively transitioning to green manufacturing practices at its Manesar and Kharkhoda facilities. The company expanded its solar capacity to 43.2 MWp in FY 2023-24 and is on track to add 15 MWp of solar capacity to its Manesar plant and 20 MWp to the upcoming Kharkhoda plant over the next two years. This will boost the total solar capacity to 78.2 MWp by FY 2025-26.
