Young father of two dies following collision between truck and car on Hume Hwy, NSW Riverina region

The victim of a fatal car accident in the NSW Riverina region last week has been identified as a father of two who was due to get married later this year.

George Hassett, 30, was a passenger inside a car travelling on the Hume Hwy at Tarcutta at 8am on Friday, August 11 when it collided with a truck.

He was airlifted to Canberra Hospital in a critical condition but died on Wednesday morning.

Hassett was a father of one-year-old twin boys Oliver and Cooper, and was due to marry his fiancé Aly in November this year.

According to a fundraiser set up by Meg Dean, Hassett suffered “multiple injuries that eventually not even the toughest young man we know could overcome”.

She also revealed the young father would be donating his organs.

“George and Aly decided long ago their wish would be to donate organs to people in need, and we all hope that maybe the people out there feeling like we are now get some solace and comfort from George’s gifts of life,” she said.

“(He was a) wonderful son, brother, nephew and friend to so many. Truly an Australian of the highest order.

“To say everyone is in shock is an understatement.”

Almost $250,000 has been raised via the GoFundMe so far.

The 30-year-old driver of the car in which Hassett was travelling was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The truck driver, a 38-year-old man, was not injured.

The driver of the car has since been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death and negligent driving occasioning death.

His licence was also suspended.

He has been granted conditional bail to appear before Wagga Wagga Local Court on Wednesday, October 4.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
