Chennai: The daughter of Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) leader and Rajya Sabha MP from Andhra Pradesh, Beeda Masthan Rao, allegedly ran her car over a 22-year-old man asleep on a pavement in Chennai’s Besant Nagar Monday night. The woman, Beeda Madhuri, was arrested by the Traffic Investigation Wing (TIW) of the police, and later released on station bail Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as S. Surya, a painter and resident of a fishing hamlet, Odaikuppam, in Besant Nagar. Surya was reportedly asleep on a pavement on Varadharaj road on the night of 17 June, when he was run over by a BMW car, allegedly being driven by the accused.
He was immediately rushed to the Government Royapettah Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries. The man was married eight months.
According to TIW, Madhuri was driving the car with another female friend. “The accused is said to have fled the spot immediately. Her friend argued with the people on the spot for a while, but she, too, fled later,” a source in the Adyar TIW police said.
The police also added that during the course of their investigation, they found that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol.
The TIW unit registered a case against Madhuri under section 304(a) (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and other sections for violation of the traffic rules.
