Teenage forward Casey Phair made history at the Women’s World Cup by becoming the youngest player to appear in a game at the tournament when she entered the pitch late in South Korea’s loss to Colombia Tuesday.

At 16 years and 26 days, Phair broke the previous record of 16 years and 34 days by Ifeanyi Chiejine when she debuted for Nigeria at the 1999 World Cup.

Phair, who grew up in the United States but was born in Korea, entered the game in the 78th minute. She had 13 touches in the 2-0 loss.

”If there’s one thing that we want the world to know, it’s how passionate she is about competing and about the Korean national team — and how committed she is to helping the team win,” her father Shane said in an interview with <a href=”https://theathletic.com/4713390/2023/07/24/casey-phair-south-korea-star/” data-type=”URL” data-id=”https://theathletic.com/4713390/2023/07/24/casey-phair-south-korea-star/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>The Athletic before the tournament. “At the end of the day, she is focused on winning. That’s the mentality. She’s always been like that.”
