MUMBAI: The 2027 World Test Championship final will be held in England in June. It will be the fourth consecutive time that England will host the WTC final-it staged the 2021 WTC final at Southampton, the 2023 final at The Oval, and will stage the 2025 final at Lord’s.
On Friday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a Social Responsibility Provider for the ICC for the period 2024-2027, which mentioned the countries and the time of the year when the ICC will stage it’s events.
After India suffered their second successive loss in the WTC final going down by 20-9 runs to Australia, their captain Rohit Sharma had said that future finals should be played outside England, and not necessarily be scheduled for June. “Why after the IPL final? Why can’t it be March? June is not the only month we should play the final. It can be played any time of the year and anywhere in the world, not just in England, it can be played anywhere in the world,” Rohit had said.
India had little time to acclimatise in England last year, having arrived straight off the IPL. The ICC’s hand, it seems, is clearly forced by the fact that several cricketing countries have their T20 leagues throughout the year, which means finding a window for the summit clash, other than in June, is difficult.
ICC introduces Women’s T20 Champions Trophy
Meanwhile, in a piece of good news for women’s cricket lovers, the ICC has decided to introduce a Women’s T20 Champions Trophy, the inaugural edition of which will be played in Sri Lanka in February 2027. The men’s Champions Trophy, of course, will be in the ODI format, and will be staged in Pakistan in February 2025.
Interestingly, Malaysia, which is an associate nation, will stage the second edition of the women’s Under-19 World Cup, in January 2025. India will host the next Women’s World Cup, in October/November 2025, while it will also host the men’s T20 World Cup in October/November 2026, along with Sri Lanka, in 2026.
