3rd T20I: India Women aim for maiden home T20I series triumph over Australia | Cricket News

NAVI MUMBAI: For India women, this home season has been a mixed bag. There were the highs of Test wins over England and Australia which were sandwiched between lows of series defeats in T20Is and ODIs against the same opponents.
On Tuesday, India will have an opportunity to avenge the ODI series defeat against the Aussies when they lock horns in the third and deciding T20I at the DY Patil Stadium.
With series tied at 1-1, India will look to win only their second bilateral T20I series — and first at home — against the Aussies. Their maiden series win, a 2-1 win, came Down Under in 2016.
The last time Australia visited India in 2022, they had hammered them 4-1.
With Tuesday’s clash being the last match of what has been a gruelling home season, the Women in Blue will need to muster their courage to tame the mighty Aussies.
The recent encounters suggest that the gap between the two teams—which at one point looked like an ocean— is narrowing down considerably with each passing game.
For India to succeed regularly against the Aussies, they will have to be consistent and cut down on mistakes. For that they must look no further than the first match of the series. It was a perfect template, and window into India’s potential, of how good they can be when all departments work in tandem. The bowlers, led by youngster Titas Sadhu, kept the Aussie batters in check and were well supported by the fielders. Then Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma guided them to a nine-wicket victory thanks to their 137-run opening wicket stand.
Their performance tailed off in Sunday’s second match which allowed Aussies a way back into the series but India will be hoping that they can gather enough strength to give them one last push. Putting a fighting total on board has become an Achilles heel for the Indian team in recent times. While batting first, they have looked out of sorts while pacing their innings—whether to go hammer and tongs or to adopt a sedate approach before opening their shoulders. After Sunday’s defeat skipper Harmanpreet Kaur felt that they failed to put a decent score on the board.
“I think the score wasn’t enough on the board, but our bowlers did well. We took it to the 19th over, that was the biggest positive. When we were in the middle, we thought 150 would be a good total but we kept losing wickets. But we must think of what we must do in the final game if we bat first,” said Harman, who has struggled with the bat of late and had scored just six in the second T20I.
Deepti Sharma, who top-scored for India with 27-ball 30, defended skipper’s form.
