49ers’ Nick Bosa knows he has it better than his Chargers brother

Nick Bosa became the latest member of his family to contrast how the 49ers and Chargers approach the football business.

Reporters asked the reigning Defensive Player of the Year about the recent extensions given to general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. The executive is signed to the Niners until 2026, while the coach is signed until 2027. Bosa’s shot at the Chargers was quick but clear as he praised the organization that made him the highest-paid defensive player ever.

“I appreciate being in an organization that’s stable,” Bosa said. “I’ve seen other teams, friends, my brother, people who have not really had a stable working environment, and I’m lucky to have that. Kyle and John work cohesively together, which is nice. He’s offensive-minded, but he knows that defensive line and the front seven is where you win games.”

Bosa’s brother Joey plays defensive end for the Los Angeles Chargers, and he hasn’t had the same coaching consistency as Nick has had. Since entering the league in 2016, the older Bosa bro has played for three head coaches and four defensive coordinators. His team even relocated from San Diego to Los Angeles after his rookie season.

Nick, meanwhile, has seen changes only at the defensive coordinator spot, but that’s because his first two DCs, Robert Saleh and DeMeco Ryans, were poached for head coaching jobs.

Pointing out the 49ers are more well managed than the Chargers is a bit of a Bosa family tradition. Cheryl Bosa, the mother of the two Bosa brothers, had similar comments about a discrepancy between the teams back in January while on the podcast of fellow 49ers mom Lisa McCaffrey.

“Joey loves his teammates, don’t get me wrong, but the Chargers ain’t the 49ers,” she said.

That difference has been apparent so far this season, as the Niners are one of three remaining undefeated teams in the NFL, while the Chargers only just picked up their first win Sunday.
