ALDI manager answers shoppers’ brutal questions in late-night Q&A session

An ALDI store manager has delighted thousands by answering shoppers’ burning questions in a late-night session on social media.

Sharing on a popular Facebook group, the unidentified ALDI boss addressed hundreds of inquiries after their partner opened up the impromptu questionnaire.

“Thought we could have a bit of fun with this,” they wrote on the Aldi Mums Facebook page. “My partner is a store manager at Aldi, ask me anything!”

More than 600 people responded to the post, inundating the store manager – and their partner – with questions.

While some of the questions were a little too “brutal” – about negative encounters with ALDI or the supermarket’s staff hiring process – to answer, others were more light-hearted.

“Do you offer post-traumatic stress disorder therapy for people who struggle to load their trolleys as fast as the groceries are scanned?” joked one.

Many others were also keen to know about products or ranges that are now missing from stores, to which the store manager replied that they were gone because “it was either seasonal, or has been discontinued”.

ALDI insider tells all

Here’s a selection of the other burning questions the store manager answered during the Facebook session:

Question: “Do Aldi employees get staff discount? Or ability to hold the special buy items to purchase?”

Answer: “Nope, no discount and no holds. First in best dressed like everyone else!”

Question: “How do they handle shoplifting? I saw a guy pocketing a piece of undies from centre aisle, I was just too busy with a toddler with tantrums.”

Answer: “If they see them, they’ll ask for it at checkout. They won’t follow them out the store but will call security.”

Question: “Why do [staff] fire your groceries at you in the most aggressive manner, damaging everything you have just chosen?”

Answer: “You can ask them to slow down, but Aldi is about efficiency and to put people through the registers and out quickly. If something has been damaged during this let them know!”

Question: “What is the staffs’ favourite go-to regular item and then sale item?”

Answer: “Oooh that’s a good one. My partner LOVES the Coleman’s mint sauce that comes out once a year, also swears by the Stirling dishwashers! Also really enjoys some of the red wines!”

Question: “Why don’t you have a more consumer friendly checkout? For example, I go into ALDI with a pram. You were out of stock of what I was wanting, I still have to line up to get out of the shop and usually only one register open. Not very efficient on getting people out quickly with only one person on and a huge line.”

Answer: “To stop shoplifting. Also only one on the till until people start passing the drinks fridge, then they call other people down to open up. There’s only maybe four staff on at peak time and need at least one on the floor, so they stagger the opening of checkouts as needed.”

Question: “I have seen staff go from packing shelves too quickly with heavy items, not taking care of their backs, knees etc. It’s like they’re on strict time limits with little concern for their personal safety.”

Answer: “They are on time limits but also closely monitored for their manual handling. ALDI are really into making sure their team members are looked after, without them, they don’t have an ALDI!”

Question: “Why isn’t there just one 12 items or less checkout?”

Answer: “This is why the self serve was introduced! ALDI has limited staff to keep costs down. Most stores run on four or five staff to do everything, people forget the staff are humans too.”

Question: “How do I avoid the middle aisles?”

Answer: “Close your eyes like I do ha ha!”

Question: “A checkout chick at ALDI said that a customer reported her for being too fast.”

Answer: “Ha ha ha she’d probably be promoted!”

Question: “Why can’t you call the individual stores directly?”

Answer: “Purely to keep staff on the floor and not answering phones to keep efficiency up!”

Question: “Is there a specific day that things get heavily reduced?”

Answer: “Nope! Random days.”

Question: “How do you return something?? Faulty or ‘off’? Take it to the till? Do they even do this?”

Answer: “Yes! Take it to the till.”

Question: “Why do they have low stock on Special Buys? Customers line up hours beforehand to be told there’s only so many of the product people are lining up for.”

Answer: “They only get limited stock, there also are issues with deliveries sometimes!”

Question: “Why doesn’t ALDI offer online shopping?”

Answer: “ALDI is low cost, and to keep it that way that have few staff per shift. They would haemorrhage money having more staff on to manage online shopping!”
