Amar Ambani: Cultivating Mental Fitness through Pranayama and Surya Namaskar

“To tackle the unpredictable nature of the stock market, my strategy is to invest money for the long term. Additionally, I only invest in thoroughly researched companies that offer a certain level of safety,” states Amar Ambani, Group President and Head of Institutional Equities at YES Securities. In a recent interview with ETMarkets, Ambani emphasizes the importance of mental fitness in handling market pressure and shares his personal routine.

Ambani starts his day at 6:00 am to cut out distractions and be more productive. He prioritizes reading and thinking during this time. He also ensures he gets enough sleep, usually around 6-7 hours, to rest well. Spending time with family and friends helps him destress and recharge. Ambani also enjoys observing nature, whether it’s the sea or mountains, as it brings him joy and rejuvenation.

In terms of his mental fitness routine, Ambani practices yoga three times a week with a Guru. His yoga sessions consist of 30 minutes of pranayama and various asana positions, such as Surya Namaskar. He concludes each session with Bhramari pranayama, which enhances brain function. On other days, he engages in activities like brisk walking, crunches, squats, pull-ups, or Surya Namaskar, depending on his mood. Ambani has also started incorporating meditation into his routine.

Ambani believes in taking technology and mobile detoxes to give his eyes a rest and improve the quality of his sleep. He values spending time away from screens to be proactive in life and maintain focus and productivity. Furthermore, he practices meditation and recites mantras to calm his mind and stay focused. He believes that true knowledge comes from self-reflection and contemplation.

Ambani and his wife constantly strive to adopt healthier habits in various aspects of their lives, such as using organic plant oils, toxin-free detergents, and drinking copper-infused water. They also make healthier food choices, particularly during the evening, to avoid excessive eating. Ambani believes in small, sustainable changes for a better lifestyle.

Being mentally fit is crucial, especially for someone deeply involved in capital markets. Ambani compares mental fitness to physical fitness for athletes. Just as physical exercise enhances performance, a combination of yoga, meditation, and mantras supports cognitive processes. Mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being are interconnected, and a holistic routine can contribute to building mental capacity and resilience.
