Amit Shah, Home Minister, Addresses Manipur Violence in Parliament

Home Minister Amit Shah criticized opposition parties for politicizing the violence in Manipur during a speech in Parliament. He stated that the government is against the violence taking place in the state and accused the opposition of misleading the country by claiming that the government is avoiding a debate on the issue. Shah blamed the tensions in Manipur on a ruling by the Manipur High Court and accused the opposition of seeking chaos instead of productive discussion. He also defended Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh for cooperating with the Centre. Shah emphasized that the government was prepared for a discussion from the beginning. He mentioned that during the past six years of government, there was no need for curfews in Manipur and pointed out that violence in the state has been decreasing. He criticized Rahul Gandhi for using the Manipur issue for political purposes and recounted the reasons behind the clashes in Manipur. Shah agreed that ethnic clashes had taken place in Manipur and deemed the violence shameful, while stating that politicizing it was even more shameful.
