On April 29, 2020, Indian cinema lost one of its gifted actors, Irrfan Khan. He died fighting neuroendocrine cancer. His last release was ‘Angrezi Medium’, directed by Homi Adajania. The director has now opened up about how Irfan Khan decided to continue with the shoot for ‘Angrezi Medium’, although he was undergoing chemotherapy.
In a recent interview with a YouTube channel, Homi Adajania revealed that the team was aware of Irrfan Khan fighting cancer. The director recalled asking Irrfan, ‘Why do you want to shoot knowing your predicament?’, and the actor’s answer was surprising. Irrfan Khan stated that if he doesn’t act, he has nothing, as acting, for him, is a spiritual experience that keeps him going.
Homi Adajania also reminisced about spending the summer with Irrfan Khan in London. He further opened up about how the team made sure to keep Irrfan Khan happy. “I remember him then getting worse, and he called me in October and said, ‘I can shoot.’ I asked him when, and he said, ‘Next month.’ I was like, ‘We don’t have a second half.’ So, the reason I jumped in it was that I realized that this was our last journey together,” the director recalled. He also spoke about the camaraderie he shared with Irrfan Khan: “We were very good friends, and it was what he wanted. The idea was to make him laugh for three months, and we did that. We did exactly that. We had a blast with him and his wife, Sutapa.”
