Apartment fire in Meadowbank, Sydney forces evacuation of building

A person has been severely burned in an apartment fire in Sydney’s northwest.

Police and paramedics were called to a five-storey building on Angas St in Meadowbank just before 4pm on Monday after a blaze engulfed a top-floor apartment within minutes.

A man believed to be in his 40s suffered severe burns to the majority of his body.

He has been transported to Royal North Shore Hospital.

Residents of the apartment building were evacuated as parts of the top floor apartment collapsed.

One resident suffered a heart attack during the evacuation and was taken to Concord Hospital.

The fire has since been extinguished.

“A crime scene has been established and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident has commenced,” NSW Police said. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
