App design and 3 other things that mean ‘big trouble’ for Tiktok in Europe |

ByteDance Ltd., the parent company of TikTok, is under the threat of severe penalties from the European Union due to new stringent regulations for major tech companies. The company is being formally investigated for its alleged inability to safeguard young users on its video-sharing platform.
Thierry Breton, the EU Internal Market commissioner, declared on Monday (February 19) that TikTok is under formal investigation as per the Digital Services Act of the EU.This act allows regulators to impose fines up to 6% of annual sales or even ban repeat offenders from the EU.
App design, privacy settings and more
Breton mentioned that the investigation will focus on TikTok’s potentially addictive design, its screen time limits, privacy settings, and the age verification procedures of the social media platform. It was previously reported by Bloomberg that such an investigation was imminent.
What Tiktok said
A representative from TikTok stated that the company will persist in collaborating with experts and the industry to ensure the safety of young users on TikTok. They also expressed eagerness to elaborate on these efforts to the European Commission.
The Digital Services Act equips regulators with extraordinary powers to take action against major tech companies regarding their content management on their platforms.
In December, EU regulators initiated their first formal investigation under the Digital Services Act into Elon Musk’s X, to identify potential violations in the handling of illegal content and misinformation. Last year, the bloc identified 19 online platforms and search engines as large entities deserving scrutiny and has been gathering information from them. This includes X, Meta Platforms Inc., Alphabet Inc., and others with over 45 million monthly active users in Europe. Additionally, three porn sites have also been added to the EU’s list.
