Apple’s software chief, Federighi, who joined the company in 2019, has asked the engineers to prioritise fixing bugs over introducing new features. While this has been an ongoing effort for a few years now, the development for next year’s release has not been going smoothly so far.
Federighi had also implemented a new approach called “feature flags.” Each feature is manually enabled, allowing employee testers to isolate its impact before adding it. Then, under him, the company also adopted “The Pact” to prevent software problems and quickly fix any mistakes.
Initial development on iOS 18, macOS 15, and more have been done
Apple is said to have completed the initial version of its upcoming operating systems for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
This version is named M1, as it marks the first major milestone. Internally, the iPhone and iPad software, which will be known as iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, respectively, is referred to as “Crystal.” The Mac software, macOS 15, is called “Glow.”
Typically, after completing the first milestone release of a software update, Apple’s engineers would start working on the second milestone. However, this year, the company decided to delay the start of the second milestone release to concentrate on cleaning up the software. The one-week pause on new feature development took place last week and is expected to end this week.
The start of work on the second milestone, known as M2, was delayed by Apple. This halt also applied to the next Apple Watch operating system, watchOS 11, which is referred to as “Moonstone,” as well as an update to the current iOS 17, called iOS 17.4. The development of Vision Pro also had to be stopped during this week.
Despite a week-long pause, Gurman notes that the future releases of iOS, macOS, and other operating systems will be released as scheduled. Gurman says that iOS 18 is set to be announced at next year’s developer conference, probably in June.
