They were believed to have been asleep at the time.

The landslide was discovered about two hours later and police immediately went to the scene to evacuate the victims, Tabanan district regional disaster management agency head Nyoman Srinada Giri told Antara Bali.

“The two victims were found in their room with their bodies buried under the rubble of the villa roof,” he said.

“The evacuation and cleaning process of the location lasted for more than an hour.”

Kross worked as a holistic tutor and Smith offered “embodiment mentorships” and ran retreats, according to the pair’s business websites.

Smith’s social media states she was originally from Melbourne.

The Department of Foreign Affairs on Thursday night said it was providing consular assistance to Smith’s family.

“We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time,” a department spokeswoman told 7NEWS.com.au.

“Owing to our privacy obligations, we are unable to provide further comment.”

Landslides, flooding and fallen trees are common hazards in parts of Indonesia during heavy rainfall.

Jatiluwih is located north of the island’s capital Denpasar and is known for its picturesque rice terraces.
