Australians seize entrepreneurial opportunities as demand for electric Toyota HiLux soars

Despite increasing demand for electric vehicles, none of the top-selling utes in Australia currently have an electric option available from the factory. To address this, two Australian conversion companies, Roev and MEVCO, have committed to converting thousands of existing diesel Toyota HiLuxes into electric cars. Roev, founded by Atlassian executives, plans to convert over 1000 HiLuxes in its first year of production, with vehicles set to be available in February 2024. CarBon, an electric vehicle leasing and rental company based in Perth, has already committed to purchasing a significant portion of these converted vehicles to supply commercial fleet operators. The electrified HiLuxes will be equipped with either a 64kWh or 96kWh battery, providing ranges of 240km and 360km respectively, and will have the ability to be charged both via DC and AC power. The conversions are expected to cost between $47,990 and $57,990 on top of the donor vehicle price. Meanwhile, MEVCO has secured a deal with electric commercial vehicle converter SEA Electric to convert 8500 new or near-new HiLux and LandCruiser diesels into electric cars over the next five years. The partnership aims to meet demand from the mining sector for battery-powered workhorses. While Australia lags behind in terms of factory-made electric utes, these conversion companies are working to bridge the gap and meet the growing demand for electric work vehicles.
