Maruti Suzuki’s Executive Officer, Rahul Bharti, stated that the company sees the initiative as a positive step towards empowering customers with authentic information. He added that the government’s draft notification on the BNCAP proposes awarding ‘Star Ratings’ to automobiles based on their performance in crash tests. The government plans to implement the program from October 1, 2023. Similarly, a spokesperson from Toyota Kirloskar Motor acknowledged that the Bharat-NCAP is a step in the right direction and will promote advancements in safety standards. Skoda Auto India and Tata Motors also expressed their appreciation for the government’s focus on safety regulations and policies. Kia India’s MD and CEO, Tae-Jin Park, commented that the initiative is beneficial for the Indian automotive industry, and the company is working towards complying with the guidelines. Under the BNCAP, manufacturers or importers of motor vehicles will need to submit an application and have their vehicles star-rated based on the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS)-197. The BNCAP is a voluntary program.

They believe that this initiative will encourage the production of safer cars in India. “We at Mahindra believe it is one of the bold steps by the Ministry of road transport and we welcome the implementation of Bharat NCAP,” said Velusamy R, President, Automotive Technology and Product Development at Mahindra & Mahindra. Furthermore, the automakers believe that the program will generate equal opportunities and foster healthy competition among car manufacturers to produce safer models for Indian customers. They also expressed their hopes that the government will provide incentives to OEMs that prioritize safety, encouraging them to continue producing safer cars at reasonable prices.
