Avoid over-exertion, Mansukh Mandaviya tells those who had severe Covid | India News

NEW DELHI: People who had suffered from severe Covid-19 infection should not overexert themselves while doing exercise and stay away from hard labour for some time, Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya has advised amid a rise in reports of sudden unexplained deaths.
Videos have surfaced on social media and messaging platforms in the recent past that show people, many of them young, collapsing and dying suddenly while dancing or singing or just out for a walk.
Mandaviya, who was speaking to media on the sidelines of an event in his native district of Bhavnagar in Gujarat on Sunday, said the ICMR – India’s apex health research agency – has done a detailed study on possible Covid link with the sudden unexplained deaths and advised that those who had recovered from severe Covid infections should desist from extra labour.
“Such people should stay away from continuous labour, laborious running, exercise, etc., for a specified short period, meaning a year or two,” Mandaviya added.
The ICMR study, titled ‘factors associated with sudden deaths among adults aged 18-45 years in India – a multicentric matched case-control study’, included 729 apparently healthy individuals aged 18-45 with no underlying health issues who died suddenly from unexplained causes between October 1, 2021 and March 31, 2023.
The study, which is yet to be peer-reviewed and published, found Covid-19 vaccination did not increase the risk of sudden death among young adults in India. Factors that did increase the chances of sudden death included having a family history of sudden death, being in the hospital for Covid-19 in the past, and certain behaviours like binge drinking and intense physical activity shortly before death, officials from the ICMR said.
