Azim Premji once rejected Narayana Murthy’s job application at Wipro: Here’s what he told Infosys co-founder

Narayana Murthy, the co-founder of Infosys and an iconic figure in India’s IT industry, has revealed that he once sought employment at Wipro but was reportedly turned down by Azim Premji, the then head of Wipro. He also said that Premji later admitted to have made a mistake by not hiring him.
“Azim once told me that one of the biggest mistakes he committed was not to hire me,” Murthy said in an interview. He noted that if he had been hired by Wipro, things would have turned out differently. Premji declined Murthy’s job application, a decision that ultimately paved the way for the creation of Infosys.
Murthy co-found Infosys, the multinational corporation, in 1981. It is among the top IT consulting companies in India, and competes with Wipro and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).
Infosys, under Murthy’s leadership, went on to become a global IT powerhouse. Murthy was the CEO of Infosys for 21 years — from 1981 to 2002.
Role of Sudha Murty in Infosys
Murthy also emphasised on his wife Sudha Murty’s role in the establishment of Infosys. In 1981, Murthy and his six friends founded Infosys and his wife provided him with the seed capital of Rs 10,000. She also urged him to focus on the export markets.
Murthy also admitted that he was being “wrongly idealistic” in being against his wife joining the company. He added that Murty was “more qualified than all seven of us”.
After stepping down from his post in 2002, he became the chairman of the board and held the position till 2006. After this stint, he became the chief mentor and in 2011, he retired from Infosys.
Murthy’s 70-hour-week advice
Murthy was in the news lately for his advice to young Indians to work 70-hour-a-week to help boost India’s economy, attracting a mixed response on social media. He recently defended his statement saying that he would not have offered such advice without having practised it himself.
