As per PTI, come November 1, 2023, only electric, CNG, and BS6 compliant buses will be allowed to ply in the Delhi NCR as per guidelines issued by the central government’s commission for air quality management. While Rai has urged for a complete ban on the BS3, BS4 diesel buses coming from neighboring cities, he also said that the state government will be issuing notices on their part to the owners of the said vehicles.

BS3 and BS4 buses emit a significant amount of particulate matter, which is a major component of air pollution. Particulate matter in ambient air can cause a number of health problems, including respiratory infections, heart disease, and cancer.
The move comes as Delhi is grappling with a severe air pollution problem. The city’s air quality has been consistently worsening lately. The central government is yet to respond to the Delhi government’s request.
On the other hand, the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government has brought back its ‘Red Light On, Gaadi Off’ campaign, a year after LG VK Saxena put it on a hold having questioned its effectiveness. Furthermore, considering the possibility of the capital’s air quality to dip further, centre’s GRAP Stage 2 has also been invoked last week.
