The young man who died when he was crushed while working on the Newcastle John Hunter Hospital expansion has been identified as a “beautiful man” who loved sport and theatre.

Harry McWilliam, 20, became trapped while working on the $835 million hospital project on Jacaranda Dve, New Lambton Heights about 9am Wednesday.

The apprentice was crushed when “a reinforcement fell and struck” him, a spokesperson for Multiplex, the company completing the project, confirmed.

McWilliam has been remembered as an active member of the Gosford Musical Society, performing in the theatre company’s junior productions of Alice in Wonderland, Madagascar and Aida, as well as several other shows with other companies.

“Yesterday Harry McWilliam was tragically taken from us,” McWilliam’s former singer teacher and family friend Toni Williams wrote in a tribute.

“Harry was a beautiful young man who loved his theatre, his football, his family and friends.

“Harry was a beautiful young man and his life will never be forgotten.”

Police and SafeWork NSW are investigating.

NSW Health Minister Ryan Park offered his condolences to McWilliam’s loved ones and colleagues.

“This is distressing for everyone involved and support and counselling is available for workers, staff and their families during this difficult time,” he said.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
