Beijing Hit by Typhoon Doksuri: Thousands Forced to Evacuate Amidst Heavy Rain

Beijing experienced its heaviest rainfall this year as the remnants of Typhoon Doksuri passed through the capital on Monday, resulting in the evacuation of over 31,000 people from their homes, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

The China Meteorological Administration reported that heavy rain persisted in Beijing, Hebei, Tianjin, and eastern Shanxi as Doksuri dissipated over northern China.

Doksuri is one of the most powerful storms to hit China in recent years, causing widespread flooding in the southern province of Fujian over the weekend, displacing hundreds of thousands of people.

According to the Beijing observatory, the average rainfall overnight reached 140.7 mm (5.5 inches), with the maximum recorded rainfall of 500.4 mm (19.7 inches) in the Fangshan area. Rainfall in the southern and western areas was expected to be even heavier on Monday.

State media reported that there were no reports of damage or casualties. However, work was suspended on over 4,000 construction sites, nearly 20,000 buildings were inspected for damage, and scenic spots in the city were closed.

While Doksuri is gradually weakening, forecasters have warned that Typhoon Khanun is approaching and is expected to hit the densely populated coast of China later this week. Authorities have expressed concerns about the potential further damage it could cause to corn and other crops that have already been affected by Doksuri.
