Tech giants, however, have maintained that AI will just be a tool to boost productivity and it will create jobs more than it takes away. Former CEO of Microsoft Bill Gates has now shared how the technology can help working-class people.
In a podcast with comedian Trevor Noah, Gates talked about how AI could help people working 5-plus days a week and provide more leisure time to them. When asked about the threat of AI to jobs, Gates – who has been vocal about how misuse of the technology can harm the society – said there could one day be a time when humans “don’t have to work so hard.”
“If you eventually get a society where you only have to work three days a week, that’s probably OK,” Gates said, adding that there could be a world where “machines can make all the food and the stuff,” and people don’t have to work a five day-plus work week to earn a living wage.

This is not the first time Gates has spoken about the advantages of AI. In March, he wrote a long blog post discussing the merits of AI technology. He emphasised that AI has the potential to revolutionise various sectors but highlighted the risks posed by the technology if it is misused.
The development comes at a time when Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella emphasised in a memo sent to employees that AI “is only a tool” that is “a means, not an end.” He was referring to a reported letter which led to the sacking of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
Recently, the internet saw an uproar over Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy’s 70 hours of work a week comment. He said that Indian youngsters “need to work for at least 70 hours a week” to boost productivity and “compete with the fastest growing countries like China and Japan”.
