“I was diagnosed with autism at the beginning of this year,” Jonathan said, getting emotional.

“This is the first time I have been able to publicly speak about it.”

The classical singing sensation explained he felt “liberated” following the diagnosis, with it allowing him to more fully understand himself.

“That is incredibly liberating and to have gone through these 28 years of my life not knowing (it was difficult),” he said.

“Now, not to have an excuse but an explanation for some of the hardships that I did face – It is incredibly gratifying,” he finished.

Jonathan shot to fame at just 17, when he auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent in 2012, alongside singing partner Charlotte Jaconelli.

Despite not winning the beloved talent show, Jonathan went on to achieve global success, with five albums to his name.

Jonathan said he was still learning to appreciate the extent of his vocal gifts.

“I’m still realising it, I suppose,” he said.

“Everytime I affect someone, I realise it again.”

Jonathan recently performed at Carols in the Domain, which will be broadcast on Channel Seven on December 23, which he called a stellar moment in his career.

“It was unbelievable — the highlight of my career so far, frankly,” he said.

“The warmth the Australian people have shown me. Not even at the concert, before, setting everything-up then at the concert, that reaction.

“It is what I live for. It’s part of the reason that I do this — It’s why I can still do this.”

Carols in the Domain will be broadcast nationally on Channel 7 and 7Plus on Saturday, December 23 from 7.30pm AEDT.
