Can NRI have Aadhaar: Here’s what you need to know

Aadhaar cards are government-issued documents that serve as proof of identity and address in India. A Non-Resident Indian (whether minor or adult) too can have an Aadhaar card. In July 2019, the Government of India changed the rules for Aadhaar cards for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs). Previously, NRIs had to reside in India for at least 182 days before applying for an Aadhaar card. However, the government now allows NRIs to apply for Aadhaar cards on arrival. Accordingly, following procedure shall be followed for Aadhaar enrolment of NRI’s:
1. Valid Indian passport shall be accepted as Proof of Identity (PoI), Proof of Address (PoA)& date of birth (DoB) document. The Aadhaar letter will be delivered to the address provided. If the applicant wants to include the name of a parent, guardian, or spouse in the address, they can enter the name in the c/o field.
2. Incase NRI’s passport does not have an Indian address, he shall be allowed to submit any of the other UIDAI approved poA documents as proof of Address.
3. Verifiers at Aadhaar centers shall ensure that above procedures are complied with, for enrolment of NRI. This issue is with the approval of the CEO, UIDAI.”
