The Fujifilm X100VI is arguably the hottest camera in the world right now but with only 1,934 of them being made — not everyone who wants one is going to get their hands on one.
But some folks in China may have a solution — if you already have the Fujifilm X100V. A user on the social media platform Weibo provided an elegant solution by placing some nifty stickers over his X100V to make it look like Fujifilm’s new camera.
As well as placing a fresh sticker bearing the “Fujifilm X100VI” name over the top of the camera, the Weibo user also has the serial number 0001/1934 placed on the hot shoe. To finish off his forgery, he places another sticker over the lens imitating the engraved logo that the X100VI carries.
Will Anyone Believe You?
The X100V and the X100VI do look similar but there are differences. As DIY Photography notes, the “DRIVE” button is in a slightly different position and the X100VI has a Bluetooth logo next to the “DISP” button.
And given the popularity of the Fujifilm X100 series — which in large part is down to a younger TikTok generation who claim the camera will “change your life” — then maybe there are people out who will attempt to obscure the truth and flex that they have the new Fujifilm.
The Weibo user who goes by Donglai_Idldick says that he is taking orders for his stickers and will ship the same day if he has stock. But Weibo is notoriously difficult to navigate for those in the West.
Be Careful in the Second-Hand Market
The very fact that someone is already making forgeries of the X100VI is a warning to anyone thinking about buying one second-hand. Asobinet advises that potential buyers check the Bluetooth mark on the back of the camera — if it’s not there then it’s not an X100VI.
In his review of the X100VI, PetaPixel’s Chris Niccolls says, “You’d be forgiven for seeing the X100VI and assuming it’s the older model. They look and operate almost identically, with the only visual differences being the badge and the slightly different OVF/EVF switch. Otherwise, we have a lot of the same hardware that we saw before, although the body itself is imperceptibly thicker than the ‘V’ model.”
