Car sun visor that breaks windshield during emergency! Ford’s ‘breakthrough’ tech explained

American automaker Ford has patented a new technology, a sun visor that can break the windshield of the car in case of emergency so that the passengers can exit the vehicle safely. Generally, a car sun visor is mounted on a metal rod which can be twisted for operations. It can also be flipped and extended sideways to block the sun rays coming from the windows.
What Ford has done here is quite simple yet convincing. The sun visor isn’t permanently mounted to the car, instead it can be taken out and the rod, which has a sharp end capable of shattering glass, can be extracted from it.
The manufacturer hasn’t specified the metal used, weight, or the size of the glass-breaking rod. However, the patent mentions that it will be ‘L’ shaped. The idea is quite simple but it remains to be seen how practical it is because in general, the glass breakers employ a hammerish grip for ease of use – something that doesn’t seem to exist in this invention.

Although the system is, for now, theoretical, it does make sense that this new technology could be a lifesaver in situations where the car is overturned or in a case of fire. It could also be used to help people escape from a car that is submerged in water. Moreover, it could be used to help people escape from a car that is locked. It could also be used to ventilate the car in an emergency situation.
It remains to be seen whether or not the manufacturer will introduce these new sun visors with their production cars.
