Caulfield Cup preview: Horses to watch, who’s hot at Randiwck

Only one horse has carried more than 57.5kg to victory over the past 40 years of Caulfield Cup history.

That is the task facing Gold Trip, who will have to equal the feat of champion WA galloper, Northerly, in order to win Saturday’s $5million feature.

Gold Trip will also match the feats of recent Caulfield Cup winners, Incentivise and Verry Elleegant, who both won the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes before Caulfield Cup success.

CAULFIELD WATCHLIST

Race 9 No.18 VALIANT KING

Irish raider having his first Australian start. He’s a northern hemisphere 3YO and they have the best record of any age/sex for international travellers down under during the spring. He was beaten 1.5L by Vauban two starts ago. Vauban is the $4.50 favourite for the Melbourne Cup. Why is this guy $18 for a Caulfield Cup, which is traditionally easier?

Race 2 No.2 RIFF ROCKET

Our preview article two weeks ago suggested not only was he a bet in the Super Impose Stakes but also the $51 for him to win the Victoria Derby was a good bet given the ratings he was producing north of the border. He won the Super Impose clocking the fastest last 400m of the day and is now the $2.50 favourite to win the Derby. Sit back and watch this horse, he could be something special.

Race 4 No.8 FACILE

Ran in some top 2YO races last season without success but indicated she had come back in good order trialling well before a big first-up win at Warwick Farm. She ran fast time and the rating she produced says she can take this next step up.

Randwick

TRACKWALKER INFO FOR RANDWICK OCTOBER 21

“Some markings on the inner lanes but provided the track stays dry they mightn’t affect the way the track races. At acceptance time we are forecasting lanes 2-5 to be the Sweet Spot”

WHO’S HOT AT RANDWICK?

Jason Collett has won 30% of the race he’s contested over the past month and if you’d backed each of his rides you’d be up +32% on your investment

Race 7 No.11 UNSPOKEN

Has recorded the fastest last 600m of the day winning both his runs this prep and looks set to make it three from three with a lovely weight drop.

Race 8 No.5 COTHELE

Resumed in the $1.5mil Alan Brown Stakes and was held up at a crucial time before launching late to just miss. Beat the favourite for this race, Democracy Manifest, when second-up two preps ago yet we’re getting a bigger price?
