Central Station campsite on K’gari (formerly Fraser Island) set to temporarily close for upgrades

A popular campsite on Queensland’s K’gari island will be temporarily closed for an upgrade to facilities sparked by “high visitor demands”.

Central Station, located in bushland west of the island’s Eurong township, will be closed from April 15 as Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service undertakes “major facility upgrades to communications and visitor facilities”.

Camping will be banned at the site until June 21, according to the authority.

“As part of these works, a new septic system will be installed at the site to cater for the high visitor demands,” the wildlife service said in an alert issued on Monday.

“To limit interruption during installation and reduce the load on the current septic system, a temporary camping booking block on all campsites will be in place from 15 April to 21 June 2024.

“The day-use facilities and walking tracks will remain open during this period.

“Some temporary access restrictions may be required to complete the planned works.

“We thank you for your support and cooperation during these upgrades.”

The campsite, accessible only via high-clearance 4WD, is a favourite for families given the area is protected from dingoes by fencing.

It also acts as a gateway to the island’s lakes, including the famous Lake McKenzie.
