Chandrayaan-3 Nears Two-Thirds of Lunar Journey, Scheduled to Land on August 23

Chandrayaan-3, India’s third lunar mission, is currently two-thirds of the way to the Moon, with a scheduled landing set for August 23. The mission aims to develop and demonstrate new technologies necessary for inter-planetary missions. The Lunar Orbit Injection (LOI) is set for August 5, 2023. Chandrayaan-3 was launched successfully on July 14, 2023, and will make India the fourth country to land a spacecraft on the moon, after the USA, China, and Russia. The mission consists of a lander module, propulsion module, and rover. It will take approximately 33 days to reach the moon’s orbit and will operate for one lunar day, equivalent to 14 days on Earth. The spacecraft is equipped with various subsystems, including navigation sensors, propulsion systems, guidance and control mechanisms, and communication antennas. The objectives of Chandrayaan-3 include a safe and soft landing, rover exploration on the moon’s surface, and in-situ scientific experiments. The mission has a budget of Rs. 250 crores. The development of Chandrayaan-3 began in January 2020, with a planned launch in 2021. However, the Covid-19 pandemic caused delays. The mission is a follow-up to Chandrayaan-2, which faced challenges during its soft landing in 2019. The successful completion of Chandrayaan-3 will enhance knowledge about the moon and contribute to scientific research. Dr. Ritu Karidhal Srivastava, a senior scientist at ISRO, is leading the mission. The landing is expected on August 23, and the spacecraft will operate for one lunar day.
