Children accused of assaulting delivery rider in Glebe attack

A man and five children have been arrested over the alleged assault of a delivery rider in Sydney’s inner west.

The rider was assaulted as he attempted to make a delivery in Glebe on April 15, police allege.

Video of the incident shows the rider retreating from the group as they scream and throw glass bottles at him, one shattering at his feet.

“Get him now, get him now,” one child can be heard saying before the rider runs in terror.

One local resident said the gang “pushed (the rider) off his bike, harassing him, stealing the food” as they circled him.

“These kids are out on the streets most nights,” the resident said.

Police were called to Glebe Point Rd about 1am on April 15, but the rider and the alleged attackers had left before officers arrived.

On Thursday, police confirmed an 18-year-old man and five children had been arrested over the incident.

The 18-year-old was on Wednesday charged with affray and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company of others.

He was refused police bail to appear before Newtown Local Court on Thursday.

Since April 17, police have also charged a 17-year-old boy, 16-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy over the incident.

A 12-year-old boy and girl were also arrested but were too young to be charged and will participate in youth conferences.

Locals and business owners are frustrated with the surge in youth crime in the area.

One Glebe cafe worker said youth gangs “feel like they are invincible”.

The cafe worker said she had to fight off a gang last month, and was allegedly assaulted by a 14-year-old girl.

“They have no fear. They absolutely have no fear. And that’s what’s the scary thing,” she told 7NEWS.
