If there is a growing perception that pro golfers are greedy, Chris DiMarco isn’t doing anything to help change it.

The Champions Tour golfer appeared on the Subpar Podcast and was asked what he and some of his fellow senior circuit players think about the current state of golf.

“We’re kind of hoping that LIV buys the Champions Tour, to tell you the truth,” DiMarco said. “Let’s play for a little real money.”

Initially, Dimarco’s remark seemed a bit of good humour and hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz laughed at the remark, but Dimarco wasn’t done.

“This is kind of a joke when we’re out here playing for $2 million,” Dimarco added. “There were like seven guys out there at TPC last week that made more money than our purses.”

The 55-year-old DiMarco is best known for his epic battle with Tiger Woods at the 2005 Masters, where he went toe-to-toe with Woods before losing in a playoff. DiMarco also lost in a playoff to Vijay Singh a year earlier at the PGA Championship.

DiMarco’s comments, assuming there was truth to them, are just another example of how the marketplace of golf had been broken by the Saudi riches thrown at LIV Golf.

We’re in this place where players have a warped sense of what golf is worth,” Mackenzie Hughes recently told Postmedia.

“It’s not good for the game, it’s overvalued golfers to a large degree and made golf as a whole a greedy, dark place,” the Canadian Hughes added.

The 2024 Champions Tour season is playing for the biggest total purse in its history with 28 events and more than $67 million up for grabs.

DiMarco won three times in 518 events on the PGA Tour, earning $22,656,443 over his career. He’s yet to win on the Champions Tour in 114 events and has broken 70 just twice in 11 rounds this season.

It seems like DiMarco’s first step toward more money is to play better golf.
