CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu announced on Wednesday that he will not seek reelection to a fifth term in 2024. This unexpected move by the popular Republican gives Democrats hope of winning the state’s top elected office during a presidential election year.
Sununu, who has been in office since 2017, stated in an interview that his decision was not influenced by the nation’s toxic political climate. However, he criticized the impact of Donald Trump on the Republican Party and pledged to support Trump’s Republican rivals in the state’s upcoming presidential primary.
While Sununu plans to stay involved in state and national politics until the 2024 election, his decision opens the door for Democrats to have a better chance at winning the governorship for the first time since 2016.
Several prominent Republicans have already expressed interest in running for governor, including Chuck Morse and former U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte. On the Democratic side, Executive Councilor Cinde Warmington and Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig have launched their campaigns.
New Hampshire is considered a swing state, but it has not voted for a Republican presidential contender since 2000. Trump lost the state by 7 points in the 2020 general election. Sununu, who is well-liked as governor and has made national appearances, announced earlier this year that he would not run for president in 2024 and believes Trump has no chance of winning the presidency again.
National Democrats view Sununu’s decision as a positive development and believe it will lead to a competitive Republican primary for governor. They argue that after four terms of Sununu’s leadership, it is time for a change in the state’s governance.
Sununu, who was elected at the age of 42, comes from a political family background, with his father serving as governor and White House chief of staff. During his time in office, he has been praised for his pro-business policies and handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Republican Governors Association Chair and Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds commended Sununu for his leadership and accomplishments as governor, highlighting New Hampshire’s ranking as number one in the nation for personal freedom.
