Congress likely to field Sonia Gandhi for Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan or Himachal | India News

NEW DELHI: Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi may be fielded for Rajya Sabha, either from Rajasthan or Himachal Pradesh, amid indications that the party has finalised its candidates for the upper House nominations.
Sources said a final decision will be taken after a discussion between Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi when they meet at a public rally in Ambikapur in Chhattisgarh.
Sonia is said to be moving to the upper House, as health reasons have forced her to stay away from electioneering in recent years. She won the LS polls from Rae Bareli in 2019.
The issue received further fillip on Monday when Rajasthan state president Govind Dotasara and legislature party leader Tika Ram Jully sent proposals that Sonia contest for RS from Jaipur. Similar requests have also come from Karnataka and Telangana, while MP Congress president Jitu Patwari made a public plea on Monday.
Sonia’s move to RS would vacate the family seat of Rae Bareli, and it is widely speculated that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra could step in to fight for the Gandhi family turf.
Congress can win RS seats from Karnataka, Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra.
Among the other contenders for RS berths are retiring members Abhishek Singhvi, Nasir Hussain, while AICC treasurer Ajay Maken is also a strong claimant under discussion. Maken fought from the lone seat in Haryana in 2022 but fell to cross-voting by a party member. Salman Khurshid, Raghuram Rajan are also said to be under discussion.
Senior Congress leaders met at the residence of Kharge to discuss the names.
