‘Critical Need for Assistance: Ontario Child’s Leg Stabilization Delayed with No Surgery Date’

For Grace Anstey, a nine-year-old from Barrie, Ontario, a cartwheel last year changed her life drastically. After dislocating her knee, doctors hoped it would heal on its own, but she has since experienced multiple dislocations, hindering her ability to be physically active. Her mother, Melanie, says that her daughter is now afraid of the pain associated with her knee dislocations, which has taken a toll on her mental health. Grace needs surgery, but finding a hospital and surgeon willing to perform the procedure has been a challenge for the family. They were referred to The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, but it was discovered that the hospital no longer allows arthroscopic surgery in young people. Now, they are being referred to other children’s hospitals in Hamilton and Ottawa, which means starting the consultation process over again with a new doctor. The family is frustrated and confused as to why SickKids couldn’t help with the surgery. When questioned about this, the hospital spokesperson cited privacy reasons for being unable to discuss specific cases. Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, where Grace’s doctor primarily practices, has a minimum age restriction of 12 for the surgery she needs. Smaller children require specialized expertise and equipment that are not available at Sunnybrook. The Ontario Ministry of Health’s spokesperson stated that the government is committed to investing in pediatric hospitals and working with them to address capacity pressures. Grace’s mother emphasizes her daughter’s suffering, noting that without surgery, Grace’s leg growth could be impacted. Despite the pain, Grace is determined to regain her mobility and participate in activities with her friends once her knee is fixed.
