Dan Murphy’s Cellar opens on Sydney’s Lindt Cafe terror siege site

The site of Sydney’s horrific Lindt café terror siege has been transformed into an upmarket cellar.

On Thursday, alcohol retailer, Dan Murphy’s, opened its doors at 53 Martin Place to reveal a new “premium concept store”.

The cellar will feature a “full range of high-quality wines, bespoke spirits and curated beers,” the company said.

Dan Murphy’s managing director Agi Pfeiffer-Smith says the cellar will become a “destination store for wine lovers and spirit aficionados”.

“The cellar will meet the needs of those who appreciate the art of winemaking and the craftsmanship behind exceptional spirits,” she said.

The cellar will feature a temperature-controlled environment showcasing rare, back-vintage and hard-to-source Australian and international wines, as well as on-demand tastings and events.

The site formerly housed the Lindt Cafe, the site of a horrifying siege in December 2014, when Man Haron Monis held 18 people hostage inside the cafe at Martin Place for 16 hours.

During the siege, two people were killed — 38-year-old barrister Katrina Dawson, and 34-year-old cafe manager Tori Johnson.

Pfeiffer-Smith said the team had been in close contact with the families since Dan Murphy’s began looking at the site in 2021.

“We began talks with both victims’ families long before making a final decision to proceed with the development of this store,” she said.

“We would have not proceeded without the approval of the victims’ families and have taken every step to respect those directly impacted.”

The new store will open Monday and Tuesday from 10am until 7pm, Wednesday to Saturday from 10am until 8pm, and Sunday from 11am until 7pm.
