Though the festival is mainly celebrated by Sikhs and Hindus, other communities in the country also commemorate the day with gusto, cheer and happiness.

The day marks the beginning of the spring season and farmers in the northern part of the country harvest the season’s crops and gear up for the next season’s sowing. It also marks the beginning of the Sikh New Year and is celebrated with new hopes, aspirations and resolutions.

Colour cultural performances, including Bhangra and Giddha dances, are organised to celebrate the joyous occasion. Moreover, devotees also visit Gurudwaras to offer prayers and participate in special prayer services. Vibrant fairs and markets are organised, offering an array of traditional handicrafts, clothes and Punjabi cuisine.
