New Delhi: Amid the cold wave conditions in the national capital, the Delhi Government on Saturday issued an order to extend the winter vacations at schools and then, hours later, withdrew it. Now, the government will make a decision on whether to extend the winter vacation today. The winter vacations in the national capital ended on Saturday (January 6), and schools are gearing up to reopen on Monday (January 9). Considering the cold wave, most of the schools have issued a notification regarding timing changes for morning classes. As per a private school’s notification, the Class III – V timings will be from 9 am to 2.15 pm. The Delhi government announced a winter break to protect students from the harsh winter weather. The winter holidays started on January 1–6, 2024. Students have to return to the school on January 8.

“In order to ensure that our students are not adversely affected due to the poor air quality in Delhi, a portion of winter Vacation was observed from November 9 to November 18, “a circular from the Directorate of Education reads. “In view of the above, the remaining portion of the Winter Vacation for Academic Session 202:3-2024 is scheduled to be observed from 01.01.2024 (Monday) to 06.01.2024 (Saturday),” the Directorate of Education circular read.

As per the Indian Meteorological Department, the cold wave continues to tighten its grip over Delhi-NCR region. The minimum temperature settled at 8.9 degrees Celsius on Saturday, two notches above the season’s average temperature. The overall humidity stood at 100 percent at 8:30 am. The national capital is likely to experience a ‘cold day’ with a maximum temperature of 16 degrees Celsius. The capital city has also been witnessing fog-like conditions for more than a week, impacting both traffic and train movements.

The IMD in a post on X wrote, “Cold day to severe cold day conditions prevailed at many places over Haryana, few places over Rajasthan and at some Pockets over Punjab. Cold day conditions prevailed at few places over Delhi and at isolated pockets over north M.P.”

The Air Quality Index (AQI) of the national capital was recorded at 315, (very poor), at 9 am, asp er the Central Pollution Control Board data. Notably, an AQI between zero and 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 and 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 and 200 ‘moderate’, 201 and 300 ‘poor’, 301 and 400 ‘very poor’, and 401 and 500 ‘severe’.

Earlier, the weather department issued a public health advisory alerting people against lung-related health impacts due to dense smog and cold waves. “Dense fog contains particulate matter and other pollutants and in case exposed it gets lodged in the lungs, clogging them and decreasing their functional capacity which increases episodes of wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath,” the IMD said.

Further, the department also issued a warning related to eye irritation due to the pollutants in the air that can irritate eye membranes, potentially causing various infections and resulting in redness or swelling of the eyes.
