Democrats Prepare to Make Marjorie Taylor Greene the GOP’s Prominent Ally in Swing Seats

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has gained prominence among House Republicans due to her inflammatory rhetoric and controversial policy proposals, including advocating for a “national divorce” between red and blue states and supporting a ban on abortion, as well as labeling Democrats as pedophiles. A recent study by CAP Action reveals that Republicans in potentially vulnerable districts align with Greene’s views a majority of the time, which could lead to television ads portraying swing-seat Republicans as clones of the extremist lawmaker. Democrats are eager to depict Republicans as extreme, and associating them with Greene, who had a low favorability rating in February, helps in creating that perception. Despite this, Greene does not mind being used as a political attacking point by Democrats, as she believes her views resonate with voters and that her influence has shaped the Republican Party. The study also shows that even moderate Republicans tend to vote with Greene, demonstrating the shift in ideology within the Republican Party’s House leadership and membership. The study’s findings may also be attributed to Democrats’ success in limiting GOP advantages by encouraging party unity in crucial votes. Notably, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) voted with Greene 96% of the time, and 92% of all House Republicans voted with her at least 90% of the time. On the other hand, Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) had the lowest percentage of voting with Greene, at 70%. The Biden campaign has already used Greene in an ad, showcasing her criticism of Biden’s policies with an ironic “I approve this message” caption. Greene dismisses the ad, claiming that her speech was edited to misrepresent her views.
