Diabetic Gentleman Criticizes Adelaide’s Rocket Bar & Rooftop Over Alleged Discrimination and Distress

A man from South Australia who has type 1 diabetes is criticizing a bar in Adelaide for their treatment of him when he tried to enter. Harrison Cal claims that the door staff at Rocket Bar and Rooftop demanded sensitive information from him and imposed unreasonable conditions for entry. Cal described the experience as humiliating and appalling. He was carrying jelly beans and insulin, as well as wearing a continuous glucose monitor, all necessary for managing his diabetes. According to Cal, he was pulled aside and questioned about possessing too many jelly beans, and staff treated his condition with suspicion. He was carrying approximately 20 jelly beans, which he needs in case his sugar levels become too high or too low. Cal also mentioned that staff requested a medical letter to prove his diabetes, which he felt was a violation of his privacy. Despite showing an email from his endocrinologist, he was told that he couldn’t bring his insulin and needles inside the venue because they were considered a risk to patrons and staff. Cal offered to leave them behind the bar for easy access if needed, but this offer was rejected. Rocket Bar and Rooftop has responded to the incident by stating that they take all medical conditions seriously and that their entry screening is normal practice. They claim to have had a conversation with Cal and have taken steps to further educate their staff on diabetes. However, Cal believes that he shouldn’t have had to share any details about his condition and feels that the staff mishandled the situation and abused their power. He hopes that the venue will improve its treatment of individuals with medical conditions in the future.
