Do you have a love for wearing cat-eye glasses? If so, you should know the story of Altina Schinasi and how she became the designer behind this timeless eyewear. Recently, Google honored this American artist on her 116th birth anniversary.
Altina Schinasi was born in Manhattan, New York in 1907 to immigrant parents. She developed a passion for the arts while studying painting in Paris and later continued her art education in New York. Not only did she become an accomplished artist, but she also worked alongside prominent figures such as Salvador Dalí and George Grosz. Schinasi even ventured into film production, as she created a documentary about George Grosz that received critical acclaim.
Inspiration for the creation of cat-eye glasses struck Schinasi in the 90s when she realized the limited options available for women’s eyewear. While peering into the window of an optician’s office, she noticed an array of mundane round frames and thought, “Why can’t women have more trendy designs?” It was during a Carnevale festival in Venice that she saw people wearing Harlequin masks with pointed edges that complemented their faces. This inspired her to mimic the design in eyeglasses.
At first, Schinasi faced rejection from manufacturers who deemed her idea too “edgy.” However, her perseverance paid off when a local shop owner believed in her vision and requested an exclusive design for six months. The Harlequin glasses quickly gained popularity among women in the US during the late 1930s and 1940s. Schinasi’s invention earned her the Lord & Taylor American Design Award in 1939, along with recognition from major magazines such as Vogue and Life.
